For those of you who loved Garden Spells (2007) as I did, I highly recommend Sarah Addison Allen's second book, The Sugar Queen. Another review said it was the perfect dessert: it’s sweet but not sappy, nutty but not ‘chock full of nuts’. As with Garden Spells, there are magical elements and people afraid to live life to the fullest. Allen has created a wonderful cast of characters who despite the strange happenings around them, are believable. Josey does little but take care of her demanding, unaffectionate mother and eat Little Debbie cakes until one day, Della Lee, a tough talking but endearing woman, shows up in her closet. My favorite character, Chloe, is pursued by books who insist they be read. (Talk about a wonderful fantasy!) The Sugar Queen is a quick read but well worth it. The only problem is now I have to wait at least a year until the next book comes out!
I am new to the group. Is there a book of the month to discuss? I just finished reading Garden Spells by Sarah Addision Allen. Loved it. It's the story of two sisters reconnecting. In the process they find out how to be true to themselves and how to develope their own special talents.
I am currently reading Ghost Map by Steven Johnson about the London cholera epidemic. Fascinating story and very well researched.
So what are you reading?
